Description: The Derwent Light or Iron Pot Light was Tasmania's first lighthouse. Its construction was spurred on by the wreck of the HOPE in 1827 and the BOMBAY in 1830. A temporary structure built in 1832 was replaced the following year by John Lee Archer's unusual oblong structure. It had 9 burners which used 3 gallons of sperm whale oil each night.
