After he moved to the west coast he owned butchers shops in most major mining towns. He moved to Balfour, Tasmania, in 1910 and soon owned a butcher's shop, the Imperial Hotel, the general store, a bakery, the bank agency, the post office, livery stables and blacksmith shop and had the mail contract to Marrawah. He also purchased land which later became part of Kaywood.
